About the Artist
Lloyd Cheatham Jr. is a Detroit-based painter whose work explores the internal conversations people carry but rarely show. Through expressive portraiture and bold color, he visualizes psychological states such as pressure, doubt, resilience, and self-recognition. Cheatham lives with high-functioning anxiety, depression, and autistic traits, and those experiences directly shape the work. His mind rarely sits still, so painting became the way to translate that constant movement of thought into something visual. Influenced by contemporary painting, comic storytelling, and Detroit’s grit, his portraits capture moments where a person confronts themselves honestly.
